Black Copper Maran

Our Black Copper Marans (BCM) breeding program began in 2019 with foundation stock sourced from Eight Acres and several respected local breeders. From the beginning, we appreciated the excellent body type and conformation of these birds, which closely aligned with the American Standard of Perfection (SOP). While they excelled in type, we felt there was room to improve the deep, richly colored eggs that have made the Black Copper Marans so sought after.

In 2025, we expanded our program by introducing Greenfire Farms' 2023 Egg Champion line, a decision that has exceeded our expectations. The improvements in egg color and overall quality encouraged us to continue strengthening our flock by carefully sourcing additional birds from several other reputable Black Copper Marans breeders.

Today, our breeding program focuses on combining correct SOP type with genetics that support strong protoporphyrin deposition, producing the deep chocolate-colored eggs the breed is known for while maintaining excellent structure, vigor, and breed characteristics. As we continue evaluating our newest additions, we are selectively retaining only the birds that best align with our long-term breeding goals.

Please note that egg color in Black Copper Marans naturally varies throughout the laying season. Hens typically produce their darkest eggs after a laying break or during the cooler months. As the season progresses, particularly during the heat of summer or after extended periods of laying, egg color will naturally become lighter before deepening again following a rest period. This is a normal characteristic of the breed and one we embrace as part of the natural laying cycle.
